Schools back out

Predictable. According to Japanese media reports, the presence of schoolchildren from schools in and around Tokyo at Tokyo Paralympic Games’ competition venues may be greatly reduced. Local authorities in three districts of the Japanese capital have already decided to cancel the attendance of schoolchildren at the Games. Schools in Shizuoka prefecture have done the same. In Chiba, a prefecture close to Tokyo, the number of students expected to attend the Games has been reduced by 13,000, more than a third of the original number, because of the rising number of COVID-19 cases in Tokyo and the rest of the country. The programme established by the organising committee to enable school children to attend the Tokyo Games planned to welcome between 130,000 and 140,000 pupils to the venues. This was maintained, despite stricter sanitary measures. Masa Takaya, the spokesman for the organising committee, explained during a press conference on Wednesday, August 25th: there have been many cancellations, but the programme has not been reassessed.
