Russia ruled out of Euro 2024

After the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, Russia will miss another major event in international football. UEFA and the Russian Football Federation announced on Tuesday 20 September that the Russian national team had been excluded from the Euro 2024 qualifying draw in Germany. It is due to be held on 9 October in Frankfurt. “The reason for this is UEFA’s decision in February to suspend the participation of Russian national teams and clubs in the organisation’s competitions, de facto until further notice,” explained the Russian federation. This decision was confirmed the same day in a UEFA press release. Since UEFA and FIFA suspended Russian clubs and teams from all competitions because of the conflict in Ukraine, Russia has been excluded from the 2022 UEFA Women’s Euro in England, and then from the play-offs for the Men’s World Cup in Qatar. The Russian Football Federation filed an appeal with the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS). But it was rejected on 15 July. According to a UEFA spokesman, quoted by AFP, the continental body has not yet made any plans for Russia’s possible reinstatement in competitions, including Euro 2024. Belarus, for its part, has not been excluded from the Euro 2024 qualifying draw. However, its national team has never before qualified for a major international football tournament.
