Robin Mitchell declares himself

Robin Mitchell is getting a taste of power. The Fijian leader, appointed interim president of the Association of National Olympic Committees (ANOC) after Sheikh al-Fahad al-Sabah stepped down in 2018, used the organisation’s annual general assembly in Crete to announce his candidacy for the presidential seat. Elections are due to be held next year. “I confirm my intention to run for the ANOC presidency in 2022,” said Robin Mitchell during the morning session of the 25th General Assembly on Sunday, October 24th. Forced to step aside from the Olympic movement while he was on trial for attempted conspiracy against the Kuwaiti regime, Sheikh Ahmad was found guilty last September by the Geneva court. Sentenced to a prison term, he has decided to appeal, but the proceedings should keep him away from the Olympic movement for a while. The ANOC presidential election next autumn will certainly be held without him. Before Robin Mitchell, another leader had already announced his candidacy: Chilean Neven Ilic, the current president of Panam Sports, the Pan-American Olympic organisation, formerly known as PASO.
