Renovation work has begun

Here we go. The working group formed by the International Union of Modern Pentathlon (UIPM) to work on the fifth discipline, which will replace equestrian from the Los Angeles 2028 Games, held its first meeting on Thursday 13 January. Due to the health crisis, the meeting was held by video conference. Composed of 21 members, including several international experts from outside the world of modern pentathlon, it is chaired by the German Klaus Schormann, UIPM President for 28 years. Its work will continue until early spring. A proposal for a fifth sport will then be submitted to the body’s Executive Committee during the summer. If approved, the new discipline will be proposed for adoption at the body’s congress, scheduled for November 2022 in Guatemala City. As a reminder, modern pentathlon has been provisionally excluded by the IOC Executive Board from the programme of the Los Angeles 2028 Games, along with boxing and weightlifting, pending the selection of a replacement discipline for equestrian. The work of the UIPM expert group, and its proposal, will be decisive for the Olympic future of a sport whose origins date back to Baron Pierre de Coubertin.
