Refugees without their mission leader

The Olympic refugee team is in full force at the Tokyo Games, even at the opening ceremony, where the 29 athletes selected by the IOC marched in the delegations’ parade. But their head of mission, the Kenyan Tegla Loroupe, is still not able to go to Japan. The former marathon runner is stuck in Doha, Qatar, where part of the team did its final training session before going to Tokyo. She tested positive for COVID-19 during that training camp and remains isolated. James MacLeod, the head of Olympic Solidarity, explained on Tuesday, July 27th, that Tegla Loroupe “was doing well”, but that she was not yet ready to go to the Tokyo Games. “We will discuss the next steps with her, in the coming days” he acknowledged. So the refugee team will likely have to do without its mission leader until the end of the week.
