Players opposed to FIFA’s plan

World Cup

Gianni Infantino is in trouble. According to a survey by FIFPro, the world players’ union, the majority of professional footballers are opposed to the project of a World Cup every two years, which is being promoted by FIFA and its president. FIFPro says it surveyed more than 1,000 professional players around the world. The poll was about their wishes regarding a possible reform of international calendars. The result: 77% of European and Asian players said they preferred the current formula, with a World Cup every four years. The same applies to 63% of players from the American continent. On the other hand, the Africans are in the same camp as their continental confederation, CAF, which is openly in favour of Gianni Infantino’s project. Only 49% of African players surveyed by FIFPro were in favour of the current format. The rest were split between proposals for a World Cup every two years and every three years.
