The IOC has just lost one of its honorary members. The Australian Phillip Walter Coles, former specialist in sprint canoeing, three times Olympian (Rome 1960, Tokyo 1964, Mexico 1968), died at the age of 91. He joined the IOC in 1982 and remained a member for three decades, before joining the ranks of honorary members in 2012. Very involved in the campaign for Sydney’s bid for the Summer Games in 2000, he was vice-president and director of the organizing committee between 1993 and 1999. Inducted into the Sport Australia Hall of Fame in 2000, Phillip Walter Coles was awarded the Olympic Order by the IOC in 2012.
