Over 51,000 visitors came from abroad

The Japanese were expecting it: the absence of foreign spectators reduced the tourism impact of the Tokyo 2020 Games a lot. But it was not insignificant either. According to the Japan National Tourism Association, just over 51,000 foreign visitors entered Japan in July 2021. This number is up compared to last year’s 3,700, during the same period, and is largely attributed to the Tokyo Games, with the majority of these “tourists” being athletes, officials or media accredited for the Olympic event. But this result is down 98.3% compared to July 2019, before the sanitary crisis. In detail, 6,100 foreign visitors came from the United States, 3,900 from China and 3,400 from the UK.
