No taxes for major events

The information was revealed by the daily Les Echos: the French government wishes to extend the tax exemption granted to major sports events. The aim is to attract a growing number of such events in the years to come. Introduced in 2014, the “tax regime for major sporting events” exempts organisers from all taxes, except VAT. It applied to the Euro football tournament in 2016. It also applies to the 2023 Rugby World Cup (pictured above) and the Paris 2024 Games. Until now, this derogatory regime only concerned international competitions awarded to France before 31 December 2017. But in the 2023 Finance Act, presented on Monday 26 September, it is planned to make the system permanent. It could thus apply to the world cycling championships for all disciplines, awarded last week by the UCI to Haute-Savoie. It could also give a serious boost to France’s bid for the 2025 Women’s Euro football tournament.
