Nigeria will replace Algeria

Good news for African athletes: Nigeria has agreed to host the African Athletics Championships next month in place of Algeria. The competition will be held in Lagos from June 23rd to 27th. It will be one of the last opportunities for the continent’s athletes to qualify for the Tokyo Games. The event was originally scheduled to take place in Algiers, but Algeria requested a postponement because of the sanitary crisis. The African championships would then have been held after the Tokyo Games, which would have deprived some athletes seeking minimum standards of a chance to qualify for Olympic competitions. Nigeria hosted the African championships for the first time in Asaba in 2018, the latest edition of the continental event.
