Newcastle and Gateshead eyeing 2026

The multisport European championships arouse envy. The second edition of the event has not yet taken place – it is due to be held in Munich in 2022 – but a candidature is already looming for the next one. The English cities of Newcastle and Gateshead have said they want to host the European Championships in 2026. The announcement was made this week by Martin Gannon, Chairman of the Gateshead Council. The British leader said such an event, one of the biggest on the international calendar in terms of audience and media coverage, would attract investors to the north-east of England. Newcastle and Gateshead are located in the same metropolitan area, the two towns being only separated by the River Tyne. The first edition of the multisport European championships took place in 2018 in Glasgow and Berlin. It brought together seven sports: athletics (Berlin), cycling, gymnastics, swimming, rowing, golf, and triathlon (Glasgow). The second edition, scheduled for next year in Munich, will have nine: athletics, cycling, gymnastics, rowing, golf, triathlon, climbing, table tennis, beach volleyball, and canoeing.
