Munich 2022 joins the movement

The list is getting longer. Organisers of the 2022 European multi-sport championships, scheduled for 11-21 August in Munich, Germany, have crossed two countries off their entry list. They have banned Russian and Belarusian athletes from the continental event. The president of the organising committee, Libor Varhanik, said he had followed the IOC’s recommendation. “We are all united in our condemnation of the Russian invasion of Ukraine,” said the German leader. In fact, the decision of the Munich 2022 team does not change the sporting situation of the event. The second edition of the European multi-sport championships is due to bring together nine sports next summer in Bavaria whose continental authorities have already announced their decision to ban Russian and Belarusian athletes: athletics, rowing, canoeing, beach volleyball, cycling, gymnastics, climbing, table tennis and triathlon. Swimming has not yet joined the movement, as FINA allows swimmers from both countries in its competitions under the guise of neutrality, but it is not on the programme of the continental multi-sport event.
