Peru has had a bad run of luck. After having lost the organisation of the 2023 World Football Championship for the under-17s, the country has just been withdrawn from hosting another major event on its sporting calendar: the 2024 World Athletics Championships for the under-20s. World Athletics announced this in a statement, explaining that the Peruvian Athletics Federation has informed it that “recent political instability and social unrest, as well as natural disasters in Peru, have resulted in the federation and the local organising committee being unable to host the event next year.” The world event was due to take place in the South American city from 26 to 31 August 2024. The international body says it is “in discussion with a replacement host“. Its name should be known “in due course“. Earlier in the week, FIFA had justified its decision to withdraw the Under-17 World Cup from Peru by a delay in the preparation of the infrastructure.
