Germany eyeing the podium

With less than three weeks to go before the opening of the Beijing 2022 Winter Games, Germany is making no secret of its ambitions. Dirk Schimmelpfennig, the delegation’s head of mission, is hoping to repeat the collective performance achieved at the 2018 PyeongChang Games, where the German team took second place in the nations’ rankings, behind Norway, with 31 medals. “Our goal is to cross the finish line as one of the top three nations,” he explained over the weekend. For Dirk Schimmelpfennig, the most difficult thing may not be to succeed at the Games, but rather to enter the health bubble prepared by the Chinese without losing too many athletes along the way. “At present, it seems harder to get safely through the remaining competitions in Europe as it might be to enter the bubble in China and deliver a satisfying Olympic competition,” he suggests.
