Kiwis won’t parade

Tokyo

A curious decision. The New Zealand delegation announced on the evening of Monday, August 23rd, that it would not be taking part in the opening ceremony of the Tokyo Paralympic Games (August 24th to September 5th). Its 32-member team is nevertheless present in the Japanese capital, but will not take part in the first evening of the event, because of the sanitary situation. The delegation refers to “rules and guidelines on COVID-19 to ensure the safety” of its members. A few hours before the opening, New Zealand is the only delegation (out of 162) taking part in the Paralympic Games to have taken such a decision, which does not call its participation in the competitions into question.
