U20 World Athletics

The World Junior (U20) Athletics Championships, held from August 18th-22nd in Nairobi, Kenya, were a great success. The first World Athletics event to be held on the African continent, they were marked by four U20 world records broken, 15 championship records, 11 junior continental records, 68 national age-group records and 10 senior national records. Kenya finished on top of the medals table, with eight gold, one silver and seven bronze medals, ahead of Finland (4, 1, 0), Nigeria (4, 0, 3), Ethiopia (3, 7, 2), and Jamaica (3, 6, 2). Over 100 countries sent at least one athlete. Eighteen nations won at least one title, 35 are in the medal rankings and 63 have at least one finalist. The Nairobi Junior Worlds were broadcast in over 70 countries around the world. The competitions were also available on World Athletics’ YouTube channel livestream. The next edition will be held next year in Cali, Colombia.
