Italy plays the women’s card

Italy is wasting no time. Its National Olympic Committee did not even wait for the symbolic date of D-100 days to reveal the identity of its flag bearers for the Beijing 2022 Winter Games. Giovanni Malago, CONI president, announced that the choice had been made for a woman, downhill racer Sofia Goggia (pictured above), gold medallist at the 2018 PyeongChang Games and two-time winner of the Downhill World Cup. She will lead the Italian delegation at the opening ceremony of the Beijing Games. Italy has also already chosen the flag bearer for the closing ceremony. A woman, too: Michela Moioli, gold medallist in snowboard cross at the PyeongChang 2018 Games. Both Italian athletes are from the Bergamo region, one of the hardest hit by the coronavirus pandemic.
