Indian Federation suspended

The Indian Football Federation (AIFF) is in trouble. It has just been suspended by the FIFA Council Bureau with immediate effect. The reason for the suspension is a “serious violation” of the international body’s statutes. FIFA explained in a statement that the decision was taken unanimously. It cited the “undue influence of third parties” in the governance of the AIFF. The Indian Football Federation has a long history of problems. It was due to elect a new president in December 2020, but the election has been repeatedly delayed by problems with constitutional amendments. In May this year, India’s highest court ordered the dissolution of the AIFF and the appointment of a three-person panel to conduct elections by September 15. The sanction imposed by FIFA on Monday (15 August) could call into question the organisation of the Women’s Under-17 World Cup in India. It was initially scheduled for November 2020, but has been postponed several times due to the health crisis. It is due to take place from 11 to 30 October 2022.
