Green light for alcohol, red for condoms

Playbook Tokyo 2020

The Tokyo Games organising committee has changed course. It announced on Sunday, June 20th, that alcohol would be allowed in the athletes’ village, but that the traditional distribution of condoms to competitors was finally cancelled in its initial form. At first, Japanese organisers had assured that this Olympic tradition, which began at the Seoul Games in 1988, would be maintained in Tokyo. But they had specified that the condoms should not be used during the Games, but taken home after the event. They have changed their minds. Condoms will be distributed to athletes, but only on the day they leave Japan. As for alcohol, it will only be allowed to be consumed in the village rooms.
