FIS plays it safe

Caution. The International Ski Federation (FIS) announced on Monday 10 January, via a press release, its decision to cancel the cross-country skiing and Nordic combined World Cup event scheduled for 21-23 January in Planica, Slovenia. This was to be the last event on the calendar before the start of the Beijing Winter Games. This time, the FIS decision is not motivated by logistical considerations or travel restrictions, but to protect the athletes from the risk of infection just days before they leave for China. “Due the current acute development of the pandemic in Slovenia, the safety of stakeholders involved at those large scale events could not be guaranteed,” the international ski body explained. The FIS said it was considering a plan B for both disciplines, but could opt for an alternative solution after the Olympic Games.
