Europe remains closed to Russian athletes

The European Athletics Association (EAA) is sticking to its guns on the issue of Russian and Belarusian athletes. Meeting on Wednesday 15 March in Lausanne to prepare its next congress, its executive council reaffirmed its position on the hottest topic of the moment in the Olympic movement. In a press release, the body stated that “athletes from Russia and Belarus must remain banned from European athletics events and activities until the war in Ukraine ends.” There is no question, therefore, of considering their possible return to the stadiums in the weeks or months to come. European Athletics recalls that its decision to exclude athletes from the two countries from its competitions was taken on 1 March 2022, the same day that the World Athletics Council followed the IOC’s recommendations to exclude Russian and Belarusian representatives.
