The European rowing calendar is taking shape for the end of the current Olympiad and the beginning of the next. The continental body of the discipline, European Rowing, announced that it has attributed two successive editions of the European Championships. In 2024, the event will be held in Szeged, Hungary. The host city will also host, at the same time, the continental qualifying regattas for the Paris 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games. The following year, Europe’s rowing elite will head to Belgrade, Serbia, one of the sport’s strongholds (photo above). The European event in 2024 was originally scheduled to take place in Sabaudia, Italy, but had to be reallocated due to “unforeseen political changes in the city.” First held in 1893, the European Rowing Championships were held almost every year until 1973, when they were replaced by the World Championships. They were then reintroduced into the international calendar in 2007. Since 2013, they have been held every year at the beginning of the season.
