Eighteen new cases linked to the Paralympic Games

Tokyo Paralympics

The Paralympics are not yet underway, but with less than a week to go before they start, the number of COVID-19 cases linked to the event keeps rising. According to the NHK, 18 new infected people were registered on Wednesday, August 18th, among accredited guests, including six from abroad. Meanwhile, the city of Tokyo announced 4,377 new coronavirus cases on Tuesday, August 17th, down from the record number of 5,773 cases registered on Friday, August 13th. According to IPC spokesman Craig Spence, 88% of athletes and officials at the Paralympic Games and living in the village are vaccinated. But the vaccination rate remains lower among Japanese volunteers assigned to the event. The IPC explained that these volunteers would not be in direct contact with Paralympic athletes.
