Eight for three spots

The battle promises to be close. No fewer than eight candidates will be vying for three places on the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) Athletes’ Commission for the Beijing 2022 Paralympic Winter Games. The IPC has announced the list. The list includes Australia’s Mitchell Gourley, Canada’s Josh Dueck, China’s Sitong Liu, Norway’s Birgit Skarstein, Russia’s Akzhana Abdikarimova, South Korea’s Min Su Han, Spain’s Pol Makuri Redolad Garcia, and USA’s Rico Roman. Three of them (Dueck, Liu and Gourley) come from Alpine skiing. Three others come from Nordic skiing (Redolad Garcia, Abdikarimova and Skarstein). Finally, the last two represent ice hockey (Roman and Han). All eight candidates are “active” athletes, so they should have competed at the Beijing 2022 Paralympic Games, or failing that, participated in the Sochi 2014 or PyeongChang 2018 Games. The elections will take place from 25 February to 11 March 2022, during the next Paralympic Games. The IPC Athletes’ Commission is composed of nine members, six from summer sports and three from winter sports. Its chairperson, Jitske Visser from the Netherlands, is a member of the Paralympic governing body.
