Czech Republic in the IBA’s sights

There is no respite in the conflict in Olympic boxing between the international federation, IBA, and its new competitor, World Boxing. The former has announced that it has asked its member national federations to withdraw immediately from an international tournament in the Czech Republic, organised by the Czech Boxing Association (CBA). The reason given was the presence in the competition of boxers and technical officials wearing US colours. As a reminder, USA Boxing officially left the IBA at the end of April to join World Boxing. A decision which had the effect of making all its members, including athletes and referees, ineligible to participate in IBA competitions. The body chaired by Russian Umar Kremlev explained in a press release that its request to withdraw from the tournament in the Czech Republic had led to the departure of the Brazilian, French and Polish teams. At the same time, the IBA explained that it had lodged an official complaint with the Independent Boxing Integrity Unit (BIIU) against the Czech federation. The complaint is that the Czech federation allowed USA Boxing representatives to participate in its Grand Prix event.
