Chungwon Choue assured of a new mandate

Chungwon Choue

No bad surprises in sight for Chungwon Choue. The 73-year-old South Korean leader will be re-elected for another term as president of the International Taekwondo Federation (World Taekwondo). He is the only candidate running for the top position. The election is due to take place on October 11th, 2021, in virtual mode. Chungwon Choue was elected for the first time in 2004 and was already the only candidate during his previous re-election in 2017. However, 40 candidates are running for the 17 seats on the World Taekwondo Council, where Asia, Europe and the Americas will have four seats, while Africa will have three and Oceania two. Under a new rule adopted this year, at least one Council member per continent must be a woman. So there are 11 women candidates running for election. A record number. Among the six candidates vying for Oceania’s two seats on the Council is Tongan Pita Taufatofua, who became famous for parading shirtless during the opening ceremony of the Rio 2016, PyeongChang 2018 and Tokyo 2020 Games.
