China offers to help the IOC

China to the rescue of the Olympic movement? 138 days before the opening ceremony of the Tokyo Games, a Chinese state councilor, Wang Yi, a senior diplomat in the Beijing government, declared very officially on Sunday (March 7th) that China was ready to discuss with other countries to establish mutual recognition procedures for COVID-19 vaccines. And, most importantly, that they are also prepared to work with the IOC to help provide very large quantities of vaccines for Olympic athletes. As a reminder, the IOC has been repeating for months that vaccination will not be compulsory to participate in the Tokyo Games. The Olympic body is content to “recommend” the athletes to be vaccinated before the Games. Thomas Bach, its president, suggested that the IOC could help finance a vaccination campaign if needed.
