China in force

Not surprisingly, China will be out in force at the next World University Games, to be held from July 28 to August 8, 2023 in Chengdu (photo above). As host country, China has announced a delegation of over 700 people, including 411 athletes. They come from around a hundred universities in 25 Chinese provinces. Average age of athletes: 22.9. Whether by chance or not, the delegation is almost equally divided, with 206 male and 205 female athletes. There will be 387 new competitors at the World University Games, and only 34 athletes with previous Olympic experience. The Chinese delegation was drawn from a series of selection events held between April and May 2023 in eleven disciplines, including swimming, judo, badminton and table tennis.
