China asks for Japan’s support

Beijing 2022

With less than five months to go before the Beijing Winter Games, the Chinese are stepping up the pace. The day after the announcement of the first sanitary measures planned during the Olympic and Paralympic event, China launched a very insistent appeal to Japan on Thursday, September 30th, to organise the Beijing 2022 Games in complete safety. “Japan has just successfully hosted the Tokyo Olympics without spectators,” said Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying. “China has given strong support to the Tokyo Olympics, so we hope to receive Japan’s understanding and support.” To date, the Chinese request remains rather vague. But it is not hard to guess that it could take the form of a closer collaboration, especially if the Chinese finally decide to impose a closed-door venue. At this stage, only foreign spectators are banned from the competitions. But the organising committee has still not launched the sale of tickets, while next week marks the symbolic date of 100 days before the opening of the Beijing 2022 Games.
