Calgary waives goodbye to 2021 Worlds

Round of applause. The Canadian city of Calgary, Alberta will not host the World Freestyle Ski and Snowboard Championships. It had applied to resume the event, after the abandonment of China for health reasons, and planned to host the competitions between February 24th and March 11th, 2021. It was still necessary to get the green light, and above all funding, state and country authorities. They never came. The project leaders therefore had to face the facts and withdraw their case. “Due to the current COVID-19 pandemic and the complications in obtaining health clearances, it has been determined that it will not be possible to move forward with the Acrobatic Skiing, Snowboarding and Freestyle Skiing, and  Moguls World Championships, tentatively scheduled for Calgary, Canada”, the International Ski Federation (FIS) said in a statement, adding that it was still looking for a fallback. Sweden would hold the rope. The world ski-cross and snowboard-cross championships, also initially scheduled for China, at the venues of the Beijing 2022 Winter Games, have been taken over by Swedish resort Idre Fjäll. They are currently taking place.
