Perfect timing. With just one year to go before the opening, the organisers of the 2023 World Athletics Championships in Budapest have unveiled the event’s logo (photo above). It is inspired by the Statue of Liberty, one of the Hungarian capital’s most famous monuments, erected in 1947 in memory of the liberation of the city two years earlier by Soviet troops. The 2023 World Outdoor Athletics Championships are set to be doubly historic for Hungary: they will mark the 150th anniversary of the city’s founding, and will be the largest sporting event ever hosted by Hungary. As the Hungarian organisers point out on their official website, Hungary has already hosted all the World Athletics Championships, in all age categories except for the outdoor version for the seniors. The 2023 event will take place from 19 to 27 August in a new stadium specially built for the event. It will then become the national training centre for Hungarian athletics.
