Broadcasters repatriate their teams

Tokyo Games organisers may not have to ask official event broadcasters to downsize their teams there. They preceded the movement and have already taken steps to limit their presence in the Japanese capital to a minimum. Gathered for a virtual roundtable organised by the IOC, four of the main rights holders – NBC for the United States, CBC for Canada, ZDF and ARD for Germany – detailed their new Olympic arrangements. And explained their decision to repatriate most of the production, even commentary, to their usual studios in their respective countries. Canadian group CBC will have press gallery locations for athletics, swimming, gymnastics, basketball and ceremonies, but the rest of the events will be commented from Montreal or Toronto. The channel’s presence in Tokyo will be reduced to 130 people. ZDF has also decided to carry out most of the production in Germany for the first time. The German channel will have commentary posts on site only for a few selected sports. NBC, for its part, has planned to bring back to the United States about 10% of the workforce who should have been in Tokyo.
