Historical background. For the first time since the event’s creation in 1934, a system of performance bonuses will be introduced next year at the European Outdoor Athletics Championships. The competitions are scheduled from June 7 to 12 in Rome, at the Olympic Stadium, just under two months before the Paris 2024 Games. The decision was adopted by the Council of the European Athletics Association, meeting on Wednesday October 18 in Vilnius, Lithuania. But how many? How much? Be patient. The body explains that the “format and structure of the bonuses will be unveiled at a later date.” The Council also approved the creation of an ambassador program for the 2024 European Championships. It will bring together the big names in European and Italian athletics, tasked with participating in the event’s promotional and marketing campaign.
