Pierre-Olivier Beckers, chairman of the IOC Coordination Commission for the Paris 2024 Games, explained at a press conference on Wednesday 31 August that the question of the venue for the preliminary phase of basketball has not yet been decided. The OCOG continues to propose the Pierre-Mauroy stadium in Lille, initially occupied by handball in the first week. But the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) has still not formally agreed. According to Pierre-Olivier Beckers, the discussions are taking place “with mutual respect, with a shared desire to validate the Lille site.” But the file is not yet closed. “We want to take time to analyse the situation,” explained the Belgian manager, particularly with regard to humidity, temperature and player recovery.
