Basketball still in Lille

The question has been dragging on for several months. It remains unanswered. Where will the preliminary phase of the basketball tournament at the Paris 2024 Games be played? Interviewed on Tuesday 22 November by FrancsJeux, the director general of the OCOG, Etienne Thobois, explained that discussions were continuing between experts from Paris 2024 and the International Basketball Federation (FIBA). “They concern very technical issues, but are taking place in a calm climate,” said Etienne Thobois. The director general of the organising committee confirmed that the discussions focused in particular on the thermal aspect, at the Pierre-Mauroy stadium in Lille, the site proposed by Paris 2024 for the preliminary phase. FIBA is asking for the stadium to be air-conditioned, in accordance with the specifications. But the studies carried out by the two parties on the cost of such an operation show quite different figures. The final decision is still pending. But Etienne Thobois assures: “For us, the basketball tournament is still planned in Lille for the preliminary phase, then at the Accor Arena in Bercy for the rest and end of the competition.
