Australia joined the movement. Like the vast majority of nations, its Olympic Committee has chosen to follow the recommendations of the IOC by appointing two flag bearers for the opening ceremony of the Tokyo Games on Friday, July 23rd. Its duo will be composed of the swimmer Cate Campbell, double Olympic champion with the 4×100 m relay (London 2012 and Rio 2016), and basketball player Patty Mills, game leader of the San Antonio Spurs in the NBA. With this choice, announced on Wednesday, July 7th, Australia opens a new page in its history. Patty Mills becomes the first aboriginal flag bearer. He will also be the third basketball representative to get this privilege, after Lauren Jackson (London 2012) and Andrew Gaze (Sydney 2000). Cate Campbell will be the first swimmer to carry the flag. Before her, only two swimmers had been chosen to march at the head of the delegation, Max Metzer at the Moscow Games in 1980, and Andrew Charlton in Los Angeles in 1932.
