Australia takes back its marbles

The list is getting shorter. Australia announced at the end of last week that it was dropping its bid to host the 2023 Asian Football Cup. After China, the original host of the continental tournament, was forced to withdraw due to the health crisis, the Australians had expressed interest in taking over the event. They joined South Korea, Qatar and Indonesia. However, the Australian Football Association said in a statement that it was withdrawing its bid, without giving reasons. In the same statement, Australia expressed its desire to host the Women’s Asian Cup in 2026. The Asian Football Confederation is due to announce the new country for the men’s tournament next month. The decision will be between Indonesia, Qatar and South Korea. The latter is the favourite.
