Australia has dropped its bid to compete with Saudi Arabia for the 2034 FIFA World Cup, but it is not abandoning all its plans. Its federation, Football Australia, has announced its decision to bid to host two major competitions on the international calendar: the Women’s Asian Cup in 2026 – the oldest women’s international competition in the world – and the Club World Cup in 2029. If successful, Australian football would enjoy a “golden decade”, after the Women’s World Cup in 2023, co-hosted with New Zealand, and before the Brisbane Games in 2032.
