Argentina to replace Indonesia

The deal was done in a big way. According to the Argentine media, FIFA has already found a replacement for Indonesia, which was rejected this week from hosting the 2023 men’s World Cup for its refusal to host the Israeli team. The new host country would be Argentina. The decision was reportedly made by Gianni Infantino, who was present at the congress of CONMEBOL, the South American football confederation. The competition would be held on more or less the same dates as in its original version in Indonesia, from 20 May to 11 June 2023. The information will be made official in the coming days. Argentina’s choice may come as a surprise, as its Under-20 national team has not qualified for the 2023 World Cup. But it can be explained by the will of the Argentinians to reinforce, by this gesture towards FIFA and its president, their chances of winning the organisation of the 2030 World Cup, for which they are candidates with Uruguay, Chile and Paraguay.
