A coincidence of timing: less than a week after France and Amélie Oudéa-Castéra, another future host country of the Olympic Games has a new Minister for Sport. Anika Wells, 36, has been appointed as head of sport in the government led by the new Prime Minister, Anthony Albanese. A native of Queensland, she is a member of the Labor Party. Her appointment comes at a historic time for Australian sport, with the Women’s Basketball World Cup, the World Road Cycling Championships, the Women’s Football World Cup, the Commonwealth Games, the Men’s and Women’s Rugby World Cups, and the Summer Games in Brisbane in 2032, all to be hosted in succession over the next ten years. Anika Wells became the most female government in the country’s history, with 13 women in ministerial positions.
