An exemption for weightlifters

The threat has been lifted. Unlike the Winter Universiade in Lucerne or the figure skating Grand Prix Final in Osaka, the World Weightlifting Championships will not fall victim to the health crisis and the emergence of the Omicron variant.  The International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) has confirmed that the event, scheduled for 7-17 December 2021 in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, will continue. The Uzbek Ministry of Health announced that foreign participants would be exempted from the travel restrictions imposed on other travellers from this Thursday 3 December. They will all be able to enter the country and will not have to undergo a quarantine period. The World Championships are therefore safe, but their participation is highly uncertain. China was the first to withdraw, even before the emergence of the new variant. Several Oceanic countries have also decided to give up. The United States will send a small delegation. Britain will also be present in Tashkent in a small committee. Italy is expected to announce its decision by the end of the week.
