An indisputable choice. The International Boxing Federation (IBA) and local organizers have decided to name the first edition of the African Cup after Nelson Mandela. It is due to take place from October 9 to 14, 2023 in South Africa, at the Durban International Convention Centre. Organized by the South African Boxing Organization (SANABO), and supported by the IBA, the African Boxing Confederation (AFBC) and the Thembekile Mandela Foundation (TMF), the Mandela Cup will have a prize fund of one million euros. It will be open to male and female boxers in 25 weight categories. Alongside the competition, the AFBC congress will be held on Friday October 13. A new president will be elected to succeed Cameroonian Bertrand Mendouga. Since his departure last month, the AFBC has been chaired on an interim basis by Nigeria’s Azania Omo-Agege. The list of candidates has not yet been unveiled.
