Late but deserved. At the end of last week, the Australian Olympic Committee announced that one of the grandstands at Sydney’s Accor Stadium in the Olympic Park would be named after Cathy Freeman. The initiative came from the New South Wales Government. It coincides with the 23rd anniversary of the opening ceremony of the Sydney 2000 Games, an evening marked by the lighting of the Olympic flame by the Australian athlete of Aboriginal origin. Eleven days later, Cathy Freeman became Olympic 400 m champion on the Olympic Stadium track, one of the most iconic moments in Australian sport. Cathy Freeman celebrated her 50th birthday last February.
