The International Swimming Federation (FINA) and the organizing committee of the Tokyo Games announced in a joint statement that a positive case of COVID-19 was recorded during the pre-Olympic diving event, which took place earlier this month in the Japanese capital. An official from a foreign delegation was tested positive. “Among 438 participants, including athletes, coaches and team officials, only one positive case of COVID-19, which affected an official upon his arrival in Japan, was confirmed and announced on April 29th,” the two parties explain. “This person was immediately quarantined in accordance with national procedures and no close contacts were identified by Japanese authorities.” The diving event was the first test-event open to a large foreign presence since the beginning of the pandemic and was subject to strict sanitary measures. Participants were only allowed to leave their hotel rooms to go to the competition site.
