A Golden Cast for the Athletes’ Commission

LA 2028

No time to lose for the Los Angeles 2028 Organizing Committee. With seven years to go, it has already officially created its Athletes’ Commission. It includes 18 members, the same number as the Athletes’ Commission of the Paris 2024 Games. Its composition reflects a perfect balance between able-bodied and disabled athletes, with nine Olympians and nine Paralympians. It will be chaired by Janet Evans, four-time Olympic gold medallist swimmer, involved from the beginning in the Californian project, and current director of athletes within the organizing committee. As for the Olympians, the list sparkles with recognized names such as Allyson Felix and Queen Harrison (athletics), Apolo Ohno (speed skating), Nastia Liukin (gymnastics), Ibtihaj Muhammad (fencing), Adam Rippon and Alex Shibutani (figure skating), Howard Shu (badminton), and finally Brenda Villa (water polo). For the Paralympics, the cast includes former skier and basketball player Alana Nichols, Lex Gillette, Samantha Bosco, Allison Compton, Rico Roman, Scout Bassett, Oz Sanchez, Ahkeel Whitehead and Ileana Rodriguez. As a bonus, IPC board member Muffy Davis, IOC vice president Anita DeFrantz and former athlete Michael Johnson were named ex-officio members. According to LA 2028, the Athletes’ Commission will not only carry the competitors’ voice throughout the seven years of the preparation of the Games. It also has the mission to accompany athletes when they start changing careers.
