The International Basketball Federation (FIBA) is breaking new ground. It has announced that the next edition of the Women’s Under-19 World Cup, scheduled for July 15-23, 2023 in Madrid, Spain, will be the first official FIBA competition to be played on a glass floor. The surface – called LumiFlex and supplied by ASB GlassFloor – has already been tested and approved in the professional 3×3 basketball league in the Netherlands and in pre-season games in the German Bundesliga. Presented as a revolutionary process, it is equipped with a “complete video floor” allowing interactive applications, the addition of advertisements on the floor, but also the display of player statistics on the floor. Its use at the U19 Women’s World Cup is the result of a decision by the FIBA Executive Board last year to change its rules to allow LED glass floors in Tier 1 competitions. The new technology will be used in the Palacio de los Deportes de la Comunidad de Madrid, where all the games of the final phase will be played.
