A first Olympic cluster

A cluster at the Tokyo Games? Almost. The organising committee confirmed it on Wednesday, August 4th: five confirmed COVID-19 cases have been identified in the Greek artistic swimming team. “I must say that we can talk about a cluster case,” acknowledged Masa Takaya, the Tokyo 2020 spokesman. In detail, this “cluster” includes four swimmers and one official. But the entire team, including 12 swimmers, has already left the village and abandoned the competition. Athletes and staff have been placed in isolation in a dedicated facility by the organising committee, including those who tested negative for the coronavirus. The organising committee also announced that it had recorded 29 new COVID-19 cases in the last 24 hours, including one foreign athlete. This is the highest daily number since the start of the Tokyo Games. The number of accredited athletes affected by the pandemic now reaches 322.
