UEFA is breaking new ground. The continental body announced on Thursday the creation of a new women’s competition, a “Finalissima” modelled on the match between Argentina, winners of the last edition of the Copa America, and Italy, the reigning European champions, at Wembley on Wednesday 1 June. The women’s ‘Finalissima’ will pit the European champions against the team that won the women’s Copa America. This year it will be played in Europe. The date and venue of the event will be announced in due course. The Women’s Euro is scheduled to take place in July 2022 in England. The Copa America Femenina is scheduled to take place in Colombia in the same month. The rapprochement between UEFA and CONMEBOL will also be reflected in two other matches. The winners of the Copa Libertadores U20, Uruguayan side Atlético Penarol, will face Portuguese U19 side Benfica, winners of the last UEFA Youth League, in Montevideo on 21 August. In addition, the winners and runners-up of Euro 2022, Portugal and Spain, will play a mini-tournament in Buenos Aires from 16 to 18 September against Argentina and Paraguay, recent finalists in the Copa America de futsal.
